Dear Prayer Partner,
Three more hard weeks and the first quarter at BSOP this academic year will be finished.
The pressure of finishing reading assignments and papers is obviously getting to some students. They are noticeably tired in class and not as responsive with their questions and comments.
Some become ill at this time of the term. Others become irritable and discover their patience and other fruit of the spirit to be lacking. A few think they have no time for personal devotions or prayer.
The end of every quarter is like this. Students feel the pressure at the end, even though they know their deadlines from the beginning of the term. Earning a Master's Degree is indeed a heavy load.
Please pray for perseverance for both us and our students during this time. May all end the quarter with physical, mental, and spiritual health. The teachers' end-of-term task of grading is demanding; please ask God to give us wisdom, fairness, and an encouraging spirit.
As a personal exercise last month, Jay wrote a poem to try to express what it feels like to be in the middle of a term as a teacher. While it is clear that he will never have a career as a poet, we hope you will appreciate it. More than that, we hope that it will motivate you to keep on praying.
We love teaching here. But, it is not as easy as it looks. We need your partnership and prayers.
Tightening our grip,
Jay and Amor
A Sunday Afternoon Off at Mid-Term
By Jay Hallowell, BSOP, July 24, 2005
For a moment, poised in space, time stands still.
Catch a breath, tighten one's grip; no time for more.
Gravity will win; a plunge down the hill,
Breathless, stomach in throat, spirits soar.
The roller coaster thrill!
But no rest until the ride is o'er.
We love the seminary roller coaster,
Each term a unique and relentless ride.
Ups, downs, sharp turns, all inevitable.
Some eyes light up; our teaching is reaching inside!
Also deadlines and discipline; some seem unteachable…
Rare hilltop pause, tighten our grip; in God we must abide.
