Well, we keep using the saws so in a way there is always a need for sharpening them, so this is a never-ending prayer request. None the less, our April saw-sharpening did its job. (It is hard to wax poetic about something as mundane and tedious as sharpening a saw.) PTL!

April 13 - 15: With BSOP faculty colleagues to a conference or retreat in Tagaytay about sharpening transformational teaching skills
Went well, PTL!
March 29, 2009 -- BSOP 50th Commencement Exercises. 52 graduated and are commencing their ministries!
January 5 to March 25, 2009 -- BSOP 3rd Quarter. We teach Romans, The Prison Epistles, The Pastoral Epistles, Inductive Bible Study, and English
Good hard quarter. Students did well overall. Though, as of 4/1/09, we are waiting for a few to finish their course requirements and submit them. We have to give a deduction for being late. In a few cases, this deduction may lead to a failing grade. So, this is both an answer and a new prayer request.
September 8 to December 19, 2008 -- BSOP 2nd Quarter: We teach Global Missions, English, and Hermeneutics
1/06/09 -- the last assignments and papers are still trickling in. It was a good quarter overall, though I am a little discouraged today by how many students are late with assignments (most)
October 18-31 -- Break for BSOP Ministry Trips
July 11, 25 - Jay leads students on Urban Missions field trips
August 1-3 -- Jay & students sleep & serve in a slum (another Urban Missions field trip)
August 11 -- Jay leads students on another Urban Missions field trip
All went very well. Students learned a lot! The people we served heard something of God and His word from us.
 June 9 to August 27 - 1st Quarter
Good quarter. Enrollment good.
The third quarter will end March 28 -- Please pray for effective teaching and learning until the end, then caring, fair, helpful grading of our students' exams and papers
Well, we did our best! Students claimed to have learned some things.
March 20-22 -- we speak and serve as counselors at the Youth Camp of Gerizim Evangelical Church ( details)

Increased enrollment
A good school year
The new academic year began well on June 13, 2007 with 50 new students, bringing enrollment up to about 110 here at the seminary. (This does not include enrollment in extension classes)
While our first 'official' seminary activities begin during the week of June 4 and classes begin the week of June 11, we are working hard settling in again, catching up with seminary faculty, staff, and students, as well as friends, OMF, godchildren, our local church and so on, such as Jay getting some heavy dental work.
While not all was easy, our return to the Philippines and readjustment to life, mentoring, and teaching here went well overall. There is a more thorough answer in our July Prayer Letter!
Safe trip to the Philippines
We and our bags arrived safely in Manila on May 17.
Before May 15: Three out-of-town trips, all in Colorado and Wyoming. Two churches to speak at. Other personal visits and phone calls. Not to mention packing. All pretty ordinary, but so is praying for our daily bread every day (the Lord's prayer in Mt. 6).
All went well, though it ended up being one church rather than two.
They did, the first week of April. PTL!
We expect one more road trip in April to Kansas & Oklahoma.
Great trip, in spite of strong winds, rain and snow. Much encouragement seeing family and friends.

We returned to Denver February 4 after a tiring but encouraging 6-week trip to the west coast to visit family, friends, and current and potential prayer partners and supporters. In Denver, we will continue visiting current and potential prayer partners and supporters, as well as get more dental work.
Good visits! Effective dental work and other mostly routine medical tests. On track to return to the Philippines in May.
January 3 - March 25 -- BSOP Third Quarter. It feels odd to not be teaching this quarter, though seeing friends and family in the USA is great! Please continue to pray for the faculty, staff, students, and graduates of BSOP this academic year. Please pray especially for those graduating on March 25, 2007 to find the ministry God has for each one.
We have received news that the third quarter and graduation went well.
After Christmas and New Year with Amor's family near Seattle, WA, we go on the road in January to Oregon, the San Francisco bay area, Southern California, and Las Vegas, NV. We will visit current and potential prayer partners and supporters.
In Las Vegas Jay will be speaking at the 18th Anniversary Service of the First Fil-Am Baptist Church on January 28. This is the church of Amor's brother and family, whom we also look forward to seeing. A bonus: Amor's mother is visiting from the Philippines.
Great trip, though we arrived back in Denver quite tired. Wonderful family times. Lots of tasty food. Encouraging visits to a variety of current and potential prayer partners and supporters and friends.
Message in Las Vegas went well.
Nov. 26 until Christmas - back in Denver. Dental work. Medical check-ups. Some small group deputation meetings. Planning and contacting for our next trips. Church Christmas activities. Working on our doctorates.
Successful treatment of Jay's sleep apnea. Painful but successful dental work. A helpful variety of useful contacts with various people, though not as much as we would have liked (Christmas is a busy time). No time for doctoral studies--just too much else to do. Great family time for Christmas. Winter fun? Overall we have enjoyed winter--a nice break after 4 years of endless summer in the Philippines.
We plan to spend Christmas and New Year with Amor's sister and family in the Seattle, WA area.
Winter driving is exciting but we have been able to dodge the worst of it on this trip. Wonderful relaxed family time and a meaningful Christmas!
Road Trip: October 21 to November 25 -- reconnecting and ministering to churches and people in the upper midwest ( for details click here)
3000 miles. Safety. Great messages and reunions. Good one time giving. Ate too much. Thank you Lord.
7 coffees in different homes with previous shareholders. Speaking in Youth Service on Oct. 1. Preaching in main service on Oct. 15. Missions Committee. A variety of other things. It has been wonderful to be back in the church where we are members.

While it is impossible to make up for being away from the American branches of our families for 4 years, we've had a great time. Highlights: joint vacations with each of Jay's three sisters and their families in the mountains of Colorado; joint vacation with Amor's sister and nephew in Quebec, New Brunswick, Maine, and New York; a family wedding in Chicago
Very heavy week, but very encouraging and helpful. Got bronchitis/colds afterwards that slowed us down. OMF is a great outfit with lots of wonderful people of whom the world is not worthy.
June 6-30: Settling in. Getting caught up with family, friends, OMF-USA, and our home church. Arranging mobilization meetings and preparing for them. Beginning as Missionaries-in-Residence at our home church. See our June 2006 Newsletter
We don't suppose we ever accomplish as much as we would like to. However, June was great. We feel that we are readjusting well. In fact, God's answers to these prayers were the focus of the first half of our July Prayer Letter.
June 5 - Jay and Amor leave BSOP to begin their one-year USA Mobilization Assignment (Arrival in Denver - June 6) ( Details about this trip)
We and our bags arrived safely as scheduled on June 6 in spite of a hassle with Customs in Honolulu that caused us to miss a flight. Fortunately we still got all our things through Customs without paying any duty--it is a bit of a mystery actually why they spent so much time with us.
Initial settling in is going well. Still have a lot to do to make it feel home. Will keep chipping away.
May: Both: preparing to move to the USA on June 5.
May: As we have extra time, both of us will continue to study and write for our doctoral programs, which is essential preparation, of course, for future seminary teaching.
Good month. OMF activities went well, as did Jay's speaking. Some writing done. Packing and goodbyes have taken more time and energy than we expected, as did Jay's grading (below). We still have a lot to do to prepare to leave. Disappointing amount of time & energy left for our studies.
May: Jay: finishing grading.
My students did well overall, though I was slightly disappointed to have to chase after a few in order to get their assignments. It is challenging to be fair & helpful in grading, but it is an opportunity for a sort of one-on-one influence for each student, via the assignment.
One of heaviest ever with some difficult decisions. But, we sensed God's leadership. I enjoy my fellow council members. Still, it is hard work. I am happy to pass this important role on to someone else while we go to the USA.
Great conference! Great worship! Theme: The Ministry of Reconciliation, handled well by our speaker. Enouraging to catch up with our missionary colleagues scattered around the northern part of the Philippines. Good trip. Bonus of lunch with Amor's brother & family who live nearby the conference site.

April 19, 23 - Jay preaching at different churches
Preached on the Gospel of Judas, compared to 1 Cor. 15:1-8. Good questions and feedback.

March 26 BSOP 47th Graduation

'Current events, both natural (massive killer landslide on another island) and political (state of emergency), continue to make many feel insecure.' (March 2006 Prayer Letter)

Jan. 1 - Mar. 26 BSOP 3rd Quarter (Teaching & Mentoring)
While some grading remains to be done (as of Mar. 24), the last classes and activities for the end of the quarter, while heavy, have gone well. ( April 2006 Prayer Letter)

Jay at BSOP Faculty and Student Retreat - Feb. 12-14
Jay got the flu and missed the Retreat. But the students seemed to find it refreshing and encouraging...
We felt God leading us to take some great steps, especially in clarifying our church planting strategies as a field and in strategically placing our missionaries...

One reliable source said there were 27,000 who indicated they had accepted Jesus; another said 33,000. Anyway, the follow-up is very well organized and moving ahead...
