Move to USA on May 4 for a year of mobilization ministry.
We arrived safely and are working hard to catch up with everyone and begin mobilization ministry.
The new academic quarter at BSOP begins, for us, on January 10. We will be teaching English, Urban Missions, and Creative Teaching Methods. We still also have our mentoring responsibilities. The quarter ends on March 23.
Good quarter, though very heavy, not least of all due to Jay finishing revising his dissertation. Somewhat disappointed in students who did not submit their requirements until April, so that we were rushed in April finishing the grading and thus unable to prepare for Home Assignment as we had hoped to do. Jay never likes giving failing grades, but had to do so. Sometimes God teaches more through failure than passing; we pray God will do so in these cases.
On January 4-7 we will be at the OMF-Philippines Field Conference with our missionary colleagues. We only meet once each three years. We pray for spiritual refreshement, good fellowship, and God-lead strategic planning for the work to which He has called us here in the Philippines at this conference.
Good conference. The goals were met. Prayer was answered. Thank you, Lord.
We are still working on our doctoral studies. This is a challenge with our ministry load. Jay completed the main draft of his dissertation in November. He successfully defended it on Dec. 7. Now he has literally hundreds of minor revisions to make to the dissertation. The marathon is nearly over; pray that Jay won't trip and fall with so little left to run in comparison to how far he has come so far.
Jay graduated on March 18, 2011, PTL!
The second academic quarter began on September 6 and ended on December 10. We were assigned: New Testament 4 and English, along with mentoring students and handling other seminary responsibilities.
While there were challenges, God used our time teaching and mentoring students, PTL!
The new BSOP school year began with a Welcome for New Students and Orientation on June 2. Regular classes began on June 7. We are teaching Hermeneutics and English, mentoring students, and handling other seminary responsibilities this first term, which will end on August 25. Many papers are due on August 25. Please pray for us to grade them helpfully.
9/8/10 -- Grading done. Here is a comment from one student about Jay's grading,
"Thank you for always painstakingly and meticulously (in a positive way) checking and commenting on our papers all the time. Your good example inspires me to pour more diligence into my paperworks to be a better and faithful teacher of the Word in the church and servant of the Lord. Thank God and thank you for a wonderful semester being in your class." 9/6/10.
There will be a Retreat for the students and faculty of BSOP on September 5-6.
The goals were met, PTL.
Pray for a good start to the new school year.
After handling a session at the orientation on June 3, Jay then spoke at the first BSOP chapel of the year, on June 9.
We do plan to take a vacation at the end of May.
We had a wonderful and needed vacation in Baguio at the end of May.
Summer means no classes to teach. So we are focusing on research, writing, and course preparation.
Jay, in particular, make substantial progress. He submitted a 140 page building block of his dissertation, which was found by his mentor to be acceptable, PTL.
39 students graduated from BSOP on March 28. May they commence well their new ministries!
Several have gotten married. We have heard from some that their new ministries are off to a good start. It will take awhile to really get the answers to this one!
The third (and last) academic quarter at BSOP began on January 4. We teach English, mentor students, and write.
Ended on March 28. With its typical ups and downs things went well overall. Thank you, Lord!
Have a Chinese New Year on February 14 of refreshed hope and faith for the new year! Another year for the Triune God!
General prayer... but the year of the tiger has been productive so far
September 14 to December 11, 2009 -- Second Quarter, 2009-2010 academic year at BSOP: we teach English as well as mentoring students. We are focusing on research and writing.
Went well, though with the normal ups and down
June 8 to August 26 -- First Quarter, 2009-2010 academic year at BSOP: we teach Inductive Bible Study, English, and New Testament 4, as well as mentoring students.
Went well, though with the normal ups and downs
Please ask God to send the right new students.
Approx. 55 new students (still waiting for an official number). Enough to replade those who graduated! Record-setting enrollment reaches 150 students!
June 3-5 -- BSOP Orientation
My (Jay's) session went well, after sorting out some technical problems with the projector.
May 27 - June 2 -- Jay teaches Inductive Bible Study as a modular class at BSOP
Exhausting. I thought module courses were exhausting when I was a student. Even more exhausting to be the teacher! But, I am pleased overall with the participation and responsiveness of the students!
May 5-25 -- 5000 feet up in the mountains in Baguio City. A break from Manila and its heat, pollution, and crowds. Rest. Reading. Writing.
A really great break. Bogged down with rain the first week, but then good weather overall. The time in Baguio is never long enough. And, we are always sad to return to Manila. (Though we are happy enough in Manila.)
April 30 to May 3 - OMF Northern Philippines conference (See May Prayer Letter)
Other than a swimming pool mishap that smashed Jay's toe-nail, conference was great. We really enjoyed the time with our OMF colleagues!
April/May: Pray for 52 graduates commencing ministries in the Philippines and Asia. Continuing students are now in various summer ministries, especially their summer practicums in churches new to them.
Have been in touch via visits, facebook, email, etc. with a number of grads. They are feeling excited and challenged by their ministries. Overall things appear to be going well.
Well, we keep using the saws so in a way there is always a need for sharpening them, so this is a never-ending prayer request. None the less, our April saw-sharpening did its job. (It is hard to wax poetic about something as mundane and tedious as sharpening a saw.) PTL!
For us, April is about Sharpening the Saw (see our April Prayer Letter).
April 13 - 15: With BSOP faculty colleagues to a conference or retreat in Tagaytay about sharpening transformational teaching skills
Went well, PTL!
March 29, 2009 -- BSOP 50th Commencement Exercises. 52 graduated and are commencing their ministries!
January 5 to March 25, 2009 -- BSOP 3rd Quarter. We teach Romans, The Prison Epistles, The Pastoral Epistles, Inductive Bible Study, and English
Good hard quarter. Students did well overall. Though, as of 4/1/09, we are waiting for a few to finish their course requirements and submit them. We have to give a deduction for being late. In a few cases, this deduction may lead to a failing grade. So, this is both an answer and a new prayer request.
September 8 to December 19, 2008 -- BSOP 2nd Quarter: We teach Global Missions, English, and Hermeneutics
1/06/09 -- the last assignments and papers are still trickling in. It was a good quarter overall, though I am a little discouraged today by how many students are late with assignments (most)
October 18-31 -- Break for BSOP Ministry Trips
See our December 2008 Prayer Letter
All went very well. Students learned a lot! The people we served heard something of God and His word from us.
Good quarter. Enrollment good.
The third quarter will end March 28 -- Please pray for effective teaching and learning until the end, then caring, fair, helpful grading of our students' exams and papers
Well, we did our best! Students claimed to have learned some things.
March 20-22 -- we speak and serve as counselors at the Youth Camp of Gerizim Evangelical Church (details)
22 accepted the Lord! Etc. -- see answers here
Increased enrollment
A good school year
The new academic year began well on June 13, 2007 with 50 new students, bringing enrollment up to about 110 here at the seminary. (This does not include enrollment in extension classes)
While our first 'official' seminary activities begin during the week of June 4 and classes begin the week of June 11, we are working hard settling in again, catching up with seminary faculty, staff, and students, as well as friends, OMF, godchildren, our local church and so on, such as Jay getting some heavy dental work.
While not all was easy, our return to the Philippines and readjustment to life, mentoring, and teaching here went well overall. There is a more thorough answer in our July Prayer Letter!
Safe trip to the Philippines
We and our bags arrived safely in Manila on May 17.
Before May 15: Three out-of-town trips, all in Colorado and Wyoming. Two churches to speak at. Other personal visits and phone calls. Not to mention packing. All pretty ordinary, but so is praying for our daily bread every day (the Lord's prayer in Mt. 6).
All went well, though it ended up being one church rather than two.
All four clearances to come through.
They did, the first week of April. PTL!
We expect one more road trip in April to Kansas & Oklahoma.
Great trip, in spite of strong winds, rain and snow. Much encouragement seeing family and friends.
Prayer requests from February 2007 Prayer Letter
Answers reported in April 2007 Prayer Letter
We returned to Denver February 4 after a tiring but encouraging 6-week trip to the west coast to visit family, friends, and current and potential prayer partners and supporters. In Denver, we will continue visiting current and potential prayer partners and supporters, as well as get more dental work.
Good visits! Effective dental work and other mostly routine medical tests. On track to return to the Philippines in May.
January 3 - March 25 -- BSOP Third Quarter. It feels odd to not be teaching this quarter, though seeing friends and family in the USA is great! Please continue to pray for the faculty, staff, students, and graduates of BSOP this academic year. Please pray especially for those graduating on March 25, 2007 to find the ministry God has for each one.
We have received news that the third quarter and graduation went well.
After Christmas and New Year with Amor's family near Seattle, WA, we go on the road in January to Oregon, the San Francisco bay area, Southern California, and Las Vegas, NV. We will visit current and potential prayer partners and supporters.
In Las Vegas Jay will be speaking at the 18th Anniversary Service of the First Fil-Am Baptist Church on January 28. This is the church of Amor's brother and family, whom we also look forward to seeing. A bonus: Amor's mother is visiting from the Philippines.
Great trip, though we arrived back in Denver quite tired. Wonderful family times. Lots of tasty food. Encouraging visits to a variety of current and potential prayer partners and supporters and friends.
Message in Las Vegas went well.
Nov. 26 until Christmas - back in Denver. Dental work. Medical check-ups. Some small group deputation meetings. Planning and contacting for our next trips. Church Christmas activities. Working on our doctorates.
Successful treatment of Jay's sleep apnea. Painful but successful dental work. A helpful variety of useful contacts with various people, though not as much as we would have liked (Christmas is a busy time). No time for doctoral studies--just too much else to do. Great family time for Christmas. Winter fun? Overall we have enjoyed winter--a nice break after 4 years of endless summer in the Philippines.
We plan to spend Christmas and New Year with Amor's sister and family in the Seattle, WA area.
Winter driving is exciting but we have been able to dodge the worst of it on this trip. Wonderful relaxed family time and a meaningful Christmas!
Road Trip: October 21 to November 25 -- reconnecting and ministering to churches and people in the upper midwest (for details click here)
3000 miles. Safety. Great messages and reunions. Good one time giving. Ate too much. Thank you Lord.

Reconnecting with our Home Church, First Denver Friends Church - Aug/Sept 2006 Prayer Letter; July 2006 Prayer Letter
7 coffees in different homes with previous shareholders. Speaking in Youth Service on Oct. 1. Preaching in main service on Oct. 15. Missions Committee. A variety of other things. It has been wonderful to be back in the church where we are members.
Reconnecting with family - Aug/Sept 2006 Prayer Letter; July 2006 Prayer Letter
While it is impossible to make up for being away from the American branches of our families for 4 years, we've had a great time. Highlights: joint vacations with each of Jay's three sisters and their families in the mountains of Colorado; joint vacation with Amor's sister and nephew in Quebec, New Brunswick, Maine, and New York; a family wedding in Chicago
Reconnecting with OMF-International - July 2006 Prayer Letter
Very heavy week, but very encouraging and helpful. Got bronchitis/colds afterwards that slowed us down. OMF is a great outfit with lots of wonderful people of whom the world is not worthy.
June 6-30: Settling in. Getting caught up with family, friends, OMF-USA, and our home church. Arranging mobilization meetings and preparing for them. Beginning as Missionaries-in-Residence at our home church. See our June 2006 Newsletter
We don't suppose we ever accomplish as much as we would like to. However, June was great. We feel that we are readjusting well. In fact, God's answers to these prayers were the focus of the first half of our July Prayer Letter.
June 5 - Jay and Amor leave BSOP to begin their one-year USA Mobilization Assignment (Arrival in Denver - June 6) (Details about this trip)
We and our bags arrived safely as scheduled on June 6 in spite of a hassle with Customs in Honolulu that caused us to miss a flight. Fortunately we still got all our things through Customs without paying any duty--it is a bit of a mystery actually why they spent so much time with us.
Initial settling in is going well. Still have a lot to do to make it feel home. Will keep chipping away.
May: (See our May Prayer Letter)
Good month. OMF activities went well, as did Jay's speaking. Some writing done. Packing and goodbyes have taken more time and energy than we expected, as did Jay's grading (below). We still have a lot to do to prepare to leave. Disappointing amount of time & energy left for our studies.
May: Jay: finishing grading.
My students did well overall, though I was slightly disappointed to have to chase after a few in order to get their assignments. It is challenging to be fair & helpful in grading, but it is an opportunity for a sort of one-on-one influence for each student, via the assignment.
May 3-5 Jay at OMF Admin. Council (May 2006 Prayer Letter)
One of heaviest ever with some difficult decisions. But, we sensed God's leadership. I enjoy my fellow council members. Still, it is hard work. I am happy to pass this important role on to someone else while we go to the USA.
April 28 to May 1 Jay and Amor to attend OMF-PH Northern Conference (May 2006 Prayer Letter)
Great conference! Great worship! Theme: The Ministry of Reconciliation, handled well by our speaker. Enouraging to catch up with our missionary colleagues scattered around the northern part of the Philippines. Good trip. Bonus of lunch with Amor's brother & family who live nearby the conference site.
April 19, 23 - Jay preaching at different churches
Preached on the Gospel of Judas, compared to 1 Cor. 15:1-8. Good questions and feedback.
March 26 BSOP 47th Graduation
God was honored in the meaningful commencement activities for 30 BSOP graduates. (April 2006 Prayer Letter)
'Current events, both natural (massive killer landslide on another island) and political (state of emergency), continue to make many feel insecure.' (March 2006 Prayer Letter)
Philippines - The state-of-emergency has officially ended. (April 2006 Prayer Letter)
Jan. 1 - Mar. 26 BSOP 3rd Quarter (Teaching & Mentoring)
While some grading remains to be done (as of Mar. 24), the last classes and activities for the end of the quarter, while heavy, have gone well. (April 2006 Prayer Letter)
Jay at BSOP Faculty and Student Retreat - Feb. 12-14
Jay got the flu and missed the Retreat. But the students seemed to find it refreshing and encouraging...
Jay at OMF Admin. Council - Feb. 6-8
We felt God leading us to take some great steps, especially in clarifying our church planting strategies as a field and in strategically placing our missionaries...
Franklin Graham Festival - Feb. 2-5
One reliable source said there were 27,000 who indicated they had accepted Jesus; another said 33,000. Anyway, the follow-up is very well organized and moving ahead...
