June 1, 2006
Amor (second from right) helps to serve cake after a farewell service. By June 5, Lord-willing, we will have finished our farewells, work, packing, etc., and will climb on an airplane to fly to the USA.
Dear Friend,
We have spent four straight years here in the Philippines teaching and mentoring seminary students for the harvest in Asia.
Four years is a long time in some ways. We have missed family and friends in the USA more than we can say. However, the four-year term has also given us the time to focus our energies. We were able to really concentrate on the people and ministries God has called us to here.
Reaching Asia for Christ is a challenge. We are very grateful for how God has used faithful partners like you to supply us and our mission agency, OMF-International, the resources needed for the last four years. But, to continue to reach Asia, much is still needed. Encouragement is needed. New missionaries are needed. Funds are needed. Prayer is needed. While letters like this one can communicate something of what God is doing, there is no substitute for face-to-face meetings.
So, on June 5, Lord-willing, we will climb onto an airplane and fly to Denver, Colorado, USA. Our church there has an apartment waiting for us, which we will use as a base. Our plan is to catch up with family and friends and to speak to as many people as we can in order to mobilize the resources needed to continue reaching Asia. Then, in mid-May 2007, we hope to return to teaching and mentoring students in the seminaries in the Philippines.
We will miss our students. Nothing beats watching God at work transforming lives! We love equipping students for ministry! However, the resources needed to do so must be mobilized.
Bringing glory to God by teaching and mentoring seminary students!

The Pond is Getting a Little Low…
On the farm in Iowa where Jay grew up there was a man-made pond that we used to water our hogs (via a pipe running beneath the dam). During the dry part of summer the thirsty pigs, along with evaporation, would significantly reduce the water level in the pond. We depended on melting snow and spring showers to refill it each year before the heat of summer.
The four-year 'summer' of our missionary term has lowered the water level in our support 'pond', mostly due to "evaporation". It needs to be refilled. The support 'pond' will need then to be enlarged for our next term. One purpose for this year of mobilization ministry is to see the pond refilled and enlarged.
Evaporation: Three things have contributed to a decline in our support over the last four years…
1. Devaluation. The exchange rate between the US dollar and the Philippines has been fairly stable for most of this term, PTL! But, in the last 6 months, the peso has increased in value by 8%, meaning each dollar is now 'worth' only 92 cents.
2. Fewer donors. Some have died. Others have experienced changed circumstances due to illness, job loss, retirement, changed family situation, or other factors. These, of course, have resulted in decreased or stopped support.
3. Inflation. In April 2006, it took 139 pesos to buy what 100 pesos bought in Metro Manila in 2000. Few adjust their giving to keep up with inflation.
Enlargement: A change in how OMF is handling retirement will increase the support that must come in before we will be allowed to return to the Philippines in May, 2007. We are glad that OMF is making this change, though it is not convenient in the short-term. The details involved in this change take more space than we have here. We are, however, happy to answer any questions you may have about this change.
How can you help refill and enlarge the pond?
1. Please pray for new supporters
2. Invite us to speak at groups/churches where we are not yet known
3. Pray for additional younger partners
4. Introduce us to people
5. Pray!

New life among old boxes…
Ignoring the boxes just to the right, Amor (left) and Thata have a Bible study. Thata, who sometimes helps us with household chores, had been unclear if she really was a Christian or not. We rejoice that she prayed to accept Jesus as her Lord and Savior after a series of Bible studies with Amor last week. Now she is sure! PTL!

Parting is such sweet sorrow…
Jay and one of his students do the motions that go with a worship song sung at a recent farewell service at BSOP. Who is to say which of the two is out of step? Such farewell activities are good ministry opportunities as well as being important for maintaining good relationships with our students and colleagues.
BSOP continues to grow
Construction of the new wing (above) of the BSOP dormitory with 32 new rooms (3 students per room) is scheduled for completion at the end of July. All the funds are in! PTL! The current dorm, with only 24 rooms, is overcrowded. July is a little late for the start of classes on June 12, which will cause some awkwardness. Please pray for good adjustments for all at the start of the school year.

Don't be surprised, therefore, if we end up with blank or dazed expressions, like Pasquale above, by the time we arrive.
Jet lag and reverse culture shock are also likely to cause such faces in the first days we are back in the USA.
At such times, God usually reviews with us the material about His faithfulness--rather happy lessons, though not easy ones! PTL!
Thank You!
Thank you very much for listening to the Lord and letting Him use you as partners in our ministry. Thank you for your prayers, your encouragement, your gifts, your support, and your cards, letters, e-mails, etc.
If you sense the Lord leading you to support us, please contact us, our church, or:
