This Prayer Letter generated a surprising number of interesting and encouraging responses:
"I never thought about grading like that. Thanks for the insight into your world. We're praying for you." r&ls
"Thanks for your update. I enjoyed reading it. especially your descriptions of how it is to grade your students. Not an easy task." ec
"Thank you for this excellent prayer letter.... What you said about the grading process is so true. You captured it! You demonstrate that this is really a good fit for you in terms of your personality and gifts. May God bless and revive you both in this season after graduation! Good, sensitive teaching DOES take a LOT of emotional, physical and spiritual energy. We salute you! We would give you a bouquet of flowers if we could!" jd
Thank you for the encouraging comments! Here is the Prayer Letter:
March 10, 2009
Dear Prayer Partner,
The students planning to graduate on March 29 have to turn in all their assignments and projects to their professors by March 13.
The non-graduating students have until March 25.
It is the end of the quarter and the end of the academic year. While it has been on our calendars for a year, it always sneaks up on us. We never quite feel ready for all the pressure and stress.
The end of the academic year is a time when your prayers are especially needed.
We continue to be amazed at how much spiritual and emotional effort grading takes.
Do I let that error go or do I mark it?
How can I encourage this student rather than overwhelming her with too much red ink?
Was I really fair between these two students?
What will help him to do better next time?
Grace. Mercy. Justice. Fairness. Holiness. God’s standards. God’s revelation. All these issues come up in how we grade. Grading is a theological and spiritual exercise. It is an important way we mentor students, disciple them, and give them the vital guidance they need for their character development, world view transformation, and improvement of ministry skills.
- Please pray for the students as they complete their assignments and as we grade them.
- Please also pray for us as we teach, mentor, and do 101 other things so that these 53 will commence their new ministries well.
Because God justifies justly,
Jay and Amor
