HALLOWELL HEARTBEATS
Prayer Letter of Jay and Amor Hallowell, with OMF-International-Philippines
Mail: c/o BSOP, 77-B Karuhatan Rd., P.O. Box 11, 1469 Valenzuela, MM, Philippines
June 17, 2002
Dear Praying Friend,
On Sunday we met Rev. Shao. The father of Rev. Shao was one of the first two converts to Christ in his village in . Rev. Shao along with his family was persecuted. He fled for safety to the Philippines. A sister of Rev. Shao, unable to flee, was forced to jump off a tower to her death, because she believed in Jesus Christ.
Rev. Shao never forgot what a privilege it is to serve in a country where he was free to worship the Lord. He became the pastor of one of the largest and most influential Chinese churches in the Philippines. And he passed on the stories of the suffering of his family for the gospel to his own five children. All five are now serving in full-time ministry. One of those five children is Dr. Joseph Shao, president of the Biblical Seminary of the Philippines (BSOP), where we are now assigned.
We are excited and humbled to be here serving among people of such a spiritual heritage and commitment. We appreciate your continued prayers for our adjustment to students from both the Chinese community of the Philippines and those from outside the Philippines (they are very different!). One essential aspect of this adjustment will be learning some Mandarin, a daunting task.
Somehow we still manage to fuss. We would like to feel more settled in our nice little two bedroom apartment on campus. But much of our OMF furniture is not available until July. Our boxes shipped from Denver have not yet arrived. And, some of the things we had stored in Manila were unexpectedly destroyed. We lost several boxes of household goods and books to termites. In the photo, though, you will see that many of our books survived. We lost a filing cabinet to rust. The rust literally ate holes through it. But, amazingly, the files stored inside were intact, great news for teachers like us.
Compared to a family who lost a sister to persecution we realize how small our losses were. We are ready to feel settled in our apartment. But we realize that we are blessed to have such a safe, comfortable place to stay. And it is but a matter of time until it feels like home.
We are excited about the start of classes today. We appreciate your prayers that we will be able to “entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others” (2 Tim. 2:2) the things that we have learned…
The Lord Reigns,
Jay and Amor
