Dear Praying Friend,
This week marks the middle of the first quarter at the Biblical Seminary of the Philippines (BSOP). Already!
Jay is responsible for two classes this quarter. One is Inductive Bible Study, which is for the first year students. He is teaching the basic principles of Bible study. That means to understand for oneself what the Bible says, what it meant in its original context, and what it means to us today. Then he will teach how to take one's personal study and turn it into questions for leading Bible studies in different situations. Each student will lead two Bible studies during the class and be evaluated on it. Amor has already adjusted her schedule so that she can evaluate some students. This is because the class will have to divide into smaller groups so that everyone can get two chances to lead.
The other class Jay is handling is The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit. This is an extension class, taught at a Metro Manila church a little over an hour away. It is an evening class, which makes for a long day on Thursdays, for both the students and their teacher. It has been a good group, with good questions, though the size of the class limits the amount of interaction.
Other responsibilities we have include preaching in various Chinese churches, which Jay is doing about twice a month. We lead a Care and Share group with five students each week. We are also involved in student devotional exercises. There are daily chapels (Jay spoke on July 17; Amor's turn will be Aug. 9). There are also weekly Faculty and Staff Prayer Meetings and Faculty Meetings. We have posted a weekly schedule of BSOP on our website. (Click the link above.)
We are now feeling more at home. Our boxes arrived from Denver in good shape. Our furniture also arrived a couple of weeks ago. We hope to get our car this week. We are making friends. God is answering prayer. We are enjoying being here. Teaching and being with students is the big thing! By the way, did you know that in the last 2½ weeks we have had around 40 inches of rain? Jay has a great story about moving our furniture in floods and rain. (Click the link above.)
Our theme verse this quarter is “Be quick to listen” from James 1:19. Thank you for your prayers as we continue to adjust to the Chinese world and as we teach and mentor Chinese students.
Listening,
Jay and Amor
