Dear Praying Friend,
Opportunity continues to knock even as we concentrate on teaching and mentoring students here at the Biblical Seminary of the Philippines (BSOP).
One advantage of living in a country like the Philippines is that one doesn't have to be rich in order to be able to afford to hire house help. In fact, one way one is expected to share what one has is by hiring people.
So, we have hired Marinel to help with household things three days a week. Marinel is from a poor family who lives nearby. She is a high school graduate who would like to go to college but her family cannot afford to send her. So, she needs to work to help her family and, hopefully, to save to be able to go to college.
As is her custom, Amor invited Marinel to study the Bible with her. Marinel had some exposure to the gospel already. A couple of weeks ago, she committed herself to Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior in a Bible Study with Amor. Praise the Lord! Please pray for Amor as she continues to have weekly Bible studies with her.
The seminary has a variety of employees, as one might expect. It takes a surprising number of staff to maintain and clean a facility like this. The seminary has approached us about leading Bible studies for the staff, probably one for the men and one for the ladies. Not all the staff are believers yet. Please join us in praying for wisdom whether or not this open door is one the Lord would like us to walk through. We already feel like we are carrying heavy loads.
First quarter ends on September 4. Jay leads a mission trip to the Mangyan with 16 faculty and students on September 10-17. The Mangyan are a tribal group on the neighboring island of Mindoro. Please pray for him as he closes out this quarter, prepares for a heavier teaching load next quarter, and leads this mission trip.
Besides mentoring a growing number of lady students, Amor continues her studies on a part-time basis. She is hoping to finish her Master of Arts in Christian Education in two years, a challenge while being in ministry also. And Jay is trying to use one day per week to make headway on his doctorate. We appreciate your prayers for our studies. We do need to continue to learn in order to be effective teachers and mentors.
Thank you for your prayers as we continue to adjust to the Chinese world and as we teach and mentor Chinese students here at BSOP.
Listening and obeying,
Jay and Amor
