Dear Praying Friend,
Leading a team of 16 faculty and students from the Biblical Seminary of the Philippines (BSOP) on a Mission Trip was the highlight of the month of September for Jay.
We went to Mindoro, the next island south of Luzon (where Metro Manila is). In the mountains of Mindoro live six primitive tribes collectively called the Mangyan. OMF has been working with the Mangyan since the 1950s. God has worked in marvelous ways to turn the Mangyan from bondage to evil spirits (very literally) to the Lord. More than a 100 Mangyan churches have been started, though they are mostly small and poor.
It was an incredible adjustment for relatively wealthy, urbanized, educated, modern Filipino-Chinese to hike up muddy mountain trails to visit in primitive farming villages. The houses we stayed in literally had dirt floors. We cooked over wood fires, carried our water, and bathed in a nearby river. We talked to various people about the Lord every day. We led special services and activities and Bible studies for various age groups every evening. A week was too short! It is hard to say who learned more, the Mangyan or us, but the trip was definitely a blessing for all concerned.
The Chinese Churches in the Philippines have the capacity for greater involvement in missions. Pray that our BSOP students will acquire a heart for missions that they can carry to the churches they are serving and will serve. Pray for Jay in November as he is the keynote speaker at the Missions Conference of a major Chinese Church here in Manila.
Second quarter got off to a rip roaring start the last week of September. Jay has a heavy load. He is teaching Global Missions, Hermeneutics and an extension class, Spiritual Formation. Second quarter ends just before Christmas.
Amor continues to roll along mentoring lady students, reaching out to BSOP Filipino employees, and other personal ministry. She just finished another semester of classes for her master's degree and will have a short break before her next semester begins in early November.
Thank you for your partnership as we continue to adjust to the Filipino-Chinese world and as we teach and mentor Chinese students here at BSOP.
Learning to listen and obey,
Jay and Amor
