Payatas Photos
About one-third of the population of Metro Manila live in slums or squatter areas, a vast need.
Some years Jay takes his Urban Missions class to a squatter area called Payatas for an extended field trip. The photos below are from one of the following trips:
 February 7 to 10, 2003.
 January 30 - February 1, 2004.
 February 4-6, 2005.
We stay with different families there. Payatas is near a huge garbage dump.
Since the class in 2005 included a medical doctor, we mobilized 4 additional doctors, 7 dentists, and a pharmacist who treated 359 patients (see some in line in the photo on the left) who could not otherwise afford medical or dental treatment.

Jay (right) and another volunteer move sacks of cement as they help to build a house for a poor family in 2003 and 2005. This photo is from the 2003 trip.

Part of one of the mountains of garbage. The trucks are dumping new garbage, so the "mountain" keeps growing. Yes, it stinks.
|
About 3000 people depend on scavenging in the garbage for their livelihood, selling scrap metal, glass, plastic, or whatever else they find.

Scavengers work in the background while Jay gets caught in the act of taking a photo.

We have a Sunday School for children each year, with between 80 -130 children. Abigail was one of them. For some reason, she really liked Jay. She is always happy to see him again.

The class also helps with some medical projects, a clothing giveaway, and some evangelistic activities.

God blessed the evangelistic efforts with two conversions through personal evangelism in 2003. Several raised their hands to accept the Lord at evangelistic meetings we led in 2003, 2004 & 2005. They are being followed up by the small church (left) in the area with which we worked. PTL!
