June 2003 Hallowell Heartbeats
June 27, 2003
Dear Praying Friend,
Pasukan. In this one simple word, Filipinos capture everything meant by “Back-to-school”, and more. Pasukan means:
- Crowds in stores buying school supplies and uniforms.
- The somewhat cooler weather brought by the cloudier days of the beginning of rainy season.
- The sometimes heavy rains of rainy season flooding streets and snarling traffic.
- Children excited to meet old friends and excited and scared to make new ones.
- The push of school administrators to get everything ready for classes to begin.
Pasukan was June 16 at BSOP. Enrollment is now 50 regular students, up for both students from outside the Philippines and those from the Philippines. Jay has been given yet another class he hasn't taught before. What is this new (to him) course? “New Testament 1: The Gospels”. This is absolutely critical foundational material for seminary students and exciting to teach! In fact, he will get to teach it twice this quarter, once for the regular students here at the seminary and again in a night class for extension students at a church in Manila.
Jay expected to teach missions, his academic specialty. But a faculty shortage has forced him to teach subjects besides those of his main expertise. Jay studied missions in order to teach and preach more effectively to people of other cultures. And this is what he is getting to do, PTL! But, please pray for Jay to be effective doing it! It takes a LOT of work to prepare to teach a seminary course for the first time.
Jay is also teaching Inductive Bible Study to the first year students. He is more of a veteran in this area, though he is still working to improve the course for this batch of new students. Please pray for wisdom in how to tailor the class to challenge the older experienced first-year students without leaving the younger less-experienced ones behind.
Pasukan also means meeting the new students. Please ask the Lord to show us which ones to mentor this new school year.
Thanking you for all you do to make it possible for us to be here for pasukan,
Jay and Amor
