August 2003 Hallowell Heartbeats
August 25, 2003
Dear Praying Friend,
The Biblical Seminary of the Philippines (BSOP) is an academic institution that has to meet strict academic standards in order to give degrees. But, the spiritual life of faculty and students is also very important. So, once per quarter we have a Spiritual Emphasis Day. On that day classes are cancelled and all faculty and students must focus on prayer, fasting, and similar spiritual disciplines.
Different students are asked to plan and lead the various activities they think are appropriate for the day. Since half of the student body is speaks Chinese, everything has to be presented in both English and Chinese. With students from various countries and cultures, some concerns that you might not think of do come up. ( See `Confession' below.)
And, with students from different countries and cultures, you might not be surprised that there are occasional misunderstandings between them. For example, just last week a misunderstanding between two students has led to a serious problem requiring disciplinary action from the seminary for at least one or perhaps both students. Jay was appointed to serve on a faculty committee of three to sort out this problem. This is not exactly his favorite activity. Please pray for his involvement on this committee-he needs wisdom, deep understanding of the personalities and cultures involved, love, fairness, and a forgiving spirit. While the problem will not be easy to solve, Jay remains hopeful that both will be able to ask for forgiveness, receive it, and that God can heal all the relationships that were damaged, for His glory!
We would like to think that seminary students are somehow above such things as listed on the handout above or that the two students did. But, they, like all of us, are still human beings saved by grace still growing in their faith. Please pray for the spiritual health, growth, and maturity of all here at BSOP.
In awe of the Holy God,
Jay and Amor

Confession
Had we prayed for Martin Burnham & his wife during their time of being kidnapped at Mindanao? Did we show any concern to our beloved missionary?
How many times we pulled down others in order to uplift ourselves?
How many times we did not wake up our roommates even though we were sure that he/she would be late for next schedule? Have we ever thought that it's also our responsibility if our partner fails in his/her ministry?
How many times we have made complaints to our staffs, facilities, services instead of thanking & appreciating their works?
