2004 April PL
April 3, 2004
Dear Praying Friend,
Holy week is a really big deal in this Catholic country. The focus is on Jesus' death, with almost no attention to his resurrection. Traditionally, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday are holidays. This year the president has added Wednesday and Saturday as holidays. Most malls and businesses will close. TV and radio stations will go off the air. Some Catholics will flagellate themselves with whips. A few will have themselves crucified. There is so much empathy with Jesus' death and so much feeling that only by ones own suffering and merit can God be pleased. Pray for many to understand that God has already done it all!

Evangelical churches often take advantage of these holidays to have a church camp. We have been invited to speak at different camps. After that we will be team-teaching a seminary class on Spiritual Formation for teachers and administrators of Christian elementary and high schools who are on their summer break. The idea is to teach a whole semester course in 6 eight-hour days. It feels overwhelming.
We need your prayers, if possible, each day during this time. (Please see the box). As one prepares for such things one feels how much a successful camp and class depends not on the main speakers or teachers but on the Holy Spirit. Please pray for the Holy Spirit to be at work in our preparation and our speaking and teaching.
Only after this class will we be able to get away to Baguio in the mountains for our own much anticipated vacation.
Happy Easter! He is Risen!
